UTI completed the works for dynamic signposting and incident preventing in the Unirii Passage

UTI completed the works for dynamic vertical signposting and incident preventing in the Unirii Passage, in Bucharest. The beneficiary of this EUR 475.000 contract, won through public tender, is the Bucharest Street Administration.

The project aimed at implementing state-of-the-art technologies that meet the need to reduce traffic congestion in the Unirii area. To this purpose, UTI developed a solution consisting of the following systems:

–  Passage management system: variable message signs, incident detection equipment, information equipment concerning the lanes availability, video monitoring, traffic lights, carbon monoxide detection, road condition detection,  weather conditions prediction, communications equipment and control one to monitor the functioning status of the  subsystems

–  Urban information system: LED digital panels, 3G communications equipment, dispatch for the information management system

The variable message signs inform the drivers if accidents took place, if works are executed and for how long, if congestion occurs in the passage or if the weather conditions are unfavourable.

In order to detect incidents produced in the ramp or in the tunnel, the UTI specialists installed video cameras with integrated detection functions that process the images and send alarms to the operators with the Bucharest Traffic Management System dispatch. This modern equipment has important advantages: increase the victims’ survival rate, reduce the waiting time for the other road users, reduce the number of secondary incidents, improve the level of cooperation among the institutions responsible for solving traffic incidents.

The equipment used to monitor the concentration of carbon monoxide sends alarms to the dispatch and to the drivers, using the information panels, about the exceeding of the applicable emission limits.

During the cold time of year, the system consisting of a complex weather station helps the drivers avoid collisions and traffic incidents because it transmits alarms and warnings  on the existence of ice on the road or recent precipitation under conditions of 0 ° C temperature at the ground level.

The lanes are controlled using full color variable message signs, indicating if a lane is open to public traffic or not.
