“Smart intersections” will give priority to public transport

The traffic in Burgas will be run by a special traffic management center.

It will have “eyes” in all key places of the city where video cameras will monitor, in real time, what is happening in the streets of Burgas.

This is the most complex project I have been working on during the recent years. It will increase security in Burgas. The software allows not only to observe, but also to manage traffic to be easily integrated and fast. The traffic center will give priority to public transport in all traffic light-controlled junctions.

High tech cameras have already been installed in the key intersections of the city. In addition, it will be easily noticed that traffic will improve and security will increase on the streets of Burgas. High-tech cameras will enable rapid response to road traffic accidents, acts of vandalism, natural disasters and crime detection,” Dimitar Nikolov said.

The Traffic Center also manages the system for bike rental and the blue zone. In order to ensure a rapid and adequate response to any situation, it provided alerts to the emergency number 112 and the traffic police, in the event of a force majeure event on the territory of the municipality.

The first six fixed cameras have already been installed in the key intersections of the city. They have high resolution and cover all lanes, having built-in motion detection, identification, filtering events and a signal to controller features – for events such as forgotten luggage, jerky movements, vandalism.

An overview camera with a 360-degree rotation range has been installed at the central bus station. It is operated by joystick from the traffic center and it has a feature that allows to remember and repeat the movement. More surveillance cameras will be placed on eight more intersections and other fixed cameras will be mounted on 23 bus lines.

All busses and trolleybuses will be equipped with CCTV and panic buttons. In addition, internal and external cameras will be installed in vehicles to capture movement.

Cameras will be mounted in 216 public transport stops. There will also be electronic boards, which will display the anticipated time until the arrival of the buses. Dashboards are linked to the GPS devices on buses, which will control the observance of the bus schedule. The public information displays installed in the vehicles will provide information regarding the route, the next stops, as well as important messages to keep the passengers informed. We have also introduced a modern electronic ticketing system using smart cards. It allows riding several lines with one ticket.

During the next stage, the intersections of the city will be upgraded and equipped with inductive networks that allow automatically measuring the traffic values, adjusting the light signals, in order to avoid traffic congestion. The idea is that the traffic center will provide the management of the street lighting system and of the air quality control system, as well as early warning in case of disasters. In the future, the Center will manage not only traffic, but also the entire urban environment.
