UTI will implement an integrated public transport management system in Burgas, Bulgaria

Burgas, the fourth largest city in Bulgaria and an important Black Sea touristic attraction is facing problems related to the safety, efficiency and comfort of public transport. The solution identified by UTI for the optimization of this situation is to implement an integrated IT public transport management system, competitive and economically efficient.

The contract for the implementation of the integrated IT public transport management, the integrated ticketing, the passenger information and the video surveillance systems was signed at the end of February. The completion of the project, awarded by public tender, is estimated for the spring of 2016, the value of the contract being Eur 9 million. The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, by means of the Regional Operational Program 2007 – 2013, and by the Burgas city budget.

The main aim of the project is to optimize and streamline the public transport conditions, as well as to increase passenger comfort and safety.

Currently, the BurgasBus transport directorate operates on paper tickets and weekly or monthly subscriptions. The solution proposed by UTI consists in the implementation of several integrated systems: automating ticketing, public transport vehicle management (including the prioritization of their access in traffic), the information of travelers in real time in bus stops, video surveillance in vehicles, stations and intersections, collected data management (information analysis, processing and archiving).

The benefits of the project will be important for the inhabitants of Burgas, by increasing the attractiveness and comfort of the public transport system, as well as for authorities, by reducing fraud, streamlining the operation of the transport system and of the commercial activities and by generating instruments that facilitate the easy expansion of the tariff `menu` with new titles and with the adaptation of the titles to the actual situation.

“We are happy to develop an important project in Bulgaria, and this confirms the adaptability of our solutions on any market. We are glad to contribute to the transformation of Burgas into a smart city, adapted to the public transport modernization requirements, something so useful for a city of such great tourism potential as Burgas. It is the second ITS project we carry out in Bulgaria, after the maintenance of the Sofia street lighting system, and is part of the international development strategy that UTI established for this year,” says Mihail Tănăsescu, UTI Vice-President.

Thus, UTI Grup confirms its position of important player in the field of smart transport solutions in Central and Eastern Europe, UTI solutions being implemented in Poland (Kalisz and Szczecin) and in important towns in Romania (Bucharest, Craiova, Iași, Timișoara, Brașov, Zalău, Deva, Ploiești).
