UTI Grup completes the new take-off – landing runway for the International Airport in Iași

The new take-off/landing runway of the International Airport of Iași, built by UTI Grup in association with Max Bögl România și Vega ’93, has been inaugurated on Thursday, August 21, within a ceremony attended by local and governmental officials.

This work is part of the Iași Airport development and modernization program which includes, besides the construction of the runway, the expansion of airship parks and the construction of a new passenger terminal.

The project benefits from European funding of a total worth of Eur 56.7 million. On August 21, the first 2150m of the total 2400m of the strip’s length will become functional; by October 2014, the entire work will be completed.

The design and execution works for the movement areas next to the new runway started on August 7, 2013 and were carried out by UTI Grup in association with Max Bögl România și Vega ’93, the consortium that won the tender carried out by the Iași County Council. The value of the works performed so far amounts to 39 million lei.

Within the project, UTI Grup carried out the lighting-signaling system of the runway, as well as the pertaining electric installations (the electric plant, the platform lighting system and the needed endowments). The beaconing system is classified, according to ICAO standards, in the second category, ensuring the ability to perform safe take-off/landing operations under low visibility conditionss, of up to 350m.

The modernization of the Iași Airport contributes to the economic and touristic development of the North-Eastern area of the country, by connecting it to the main European destinations, by increasing the number of flights and, implicitly, the passenger transit.

UTI Grup, by means of its Construction and Facility Management business line, has participated in similar projects before, for the International Aurel Vlaicu (Baneasa) Airport in Bucharest, the Sibiu International Airport and the Varna International Airport in Bulgaria.
