IAŞI, Romania – Adaptive Traffic Management System

Country City Number of inhabitants Area
Romania Iasi 290,000 93,9 km2

Iași, the fourth largest city in Romania has traditionally been one of the leading centers of Romanian social, cultural, academic and artistic life. Over the last years, the city was faced with challenges related to increased traffic, maladjusted infrastructure and lack of an integrated traffic management system, able to meet the mobility needs of a modern city.

Solution

The city of Iasi needed a traffic management solution that could effectively contribute to the inhabitants’ quality of life and support the future development of the city.  UTI’s answer was a cutting-edge adapted integrated traffic management system, technologically similar to the systems implemented in major cities in Europe (Berlin, Vienna, Roma, Stockholm, Prague) and based on the integration of traffic measurement, control and optimization technologies within the existing road infrastructure.

Almost 90 of the 200 intersections within the city have been equipped with new traffic lights installations, traffic controllers and sensors to measure and record traffic values, video cameras to ensure a safe environment, and connecting telecommunication network that links all intersections with the Traffic Control Center.

The intelligence of this system resides in the adaptive functioning of the traffic lights and traffic control components, i.e. the adjustment of the red and green light according to the traffic values registers by the sensors that send the information to the Traffic Control Center. Unlike the fixed intersection time plans time that cannot be adjusted based on the variable traffic values or unpredictable events (traffic jams, accidents, etc), the adaptive system implemented in Iasi is flexible and adjusts signal timing and phasing according to the gathered data– the number of cars that approach the junction, their speed and direction, etc.

The system analyses all data and adjusts the green light  to provide a continuous vehicle flow and prevent congestion.
