SZCZECIN, Poland – Traffic Management System

Country City Number of inhabitants Area
Poland Szczecin 408,811 301 km2

Szczecin, Poland’s seventh-largest city and a major port of the Baltic Sea, was constantly faced with the pressure of the increasing road traffic that could not be solved with a simple traffic light system.SolutionUTI has answered  the need of Szczecin city hall,  designed and implemented a complex traffic management system that provides real-time information regarding the road infrastructures, traffic incidents, available detour routes in case some unpredictable situations occur, in order to reduce the waiting times and to increase the speed. The system calculates the traveling time among various points and delivers information pertaining to the available traveling routes and times to the traffic participants. The information gathered by the traffic analysis, assessment and prognosis will be accessed on a web portal or directly on the smartphones.

Components

  • Urban traffic control
  • Video surveillance and monitoring
  • Fiber optic communication system
  • Variable message signs
  • Information web portal

All the data collected by these subsystems are assessed and analyzed within a complex Traffic Control Center.New functionalities can be added to the system, as it is open and scalable.

Benefits

  • Improved road user safety and shorter response times by emergency services
  • Quicker travel times in urban areas: smoother traffic flows and shorter public transport journey times
  • Widespread availability of road user information: accurate, reliable user information to improve the travel experience
  • Less pollution: lower fuel consumption and less environmental impact

In 2013, the traffic management system of Szczecin has been awarded the prize for the best implementation of a traffic management system in Poland by ITS Polska.
